A new light rail vehicle for the City of Edmonton

Project Brief

N+P was invited to support Hyundai Rotem in creating an iconic design for Edmonton’s new fleet of 46 light rail vehicles. The ambition was to develop a distinctive identity that reflects the people, culture, nature and infrastructure that make Edmonton unique. N+P supported Hyundai Rotem throughout the bidding process and, following the contract award, across the subsequent design development and refinement stages. The first new LRV arrived in Edmonton in summer 2025.

Interior design of the new Hyundai Rotem LRV for Edmonton

Building on the Existing Fleet

The exterior design creates a new identity while evolving the character of Edmonton’s existing fleet. A defining contour line flows along the vehicle body, integrating the lighting elements into a distinctive visual signature while supporting visibility and safety.

An Open and Inviting Interior

A bright and welcoming interior puts passenger comfort, accessibility and orientation at its core. Clearly highlighted priority areas and handrails improve visibility, while adaptable lighting creates an appropriate atmosphere for both daytime and nighttime travel.
